Essential Navigation & Seamanship

However you decide to take this course, classroom or interactive it offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new or inexperienced skippers and crew. In fact it's for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving. It will compliment any Powerboat Level 2 Course, Start Yachting and Helmsman courses.

Studied over 2 x 8 hour days or 6 x 3 hour evenings.

  • Tidal awareness

  • Pilotage

  • Anchoring

  • Passage Planning

 

  • Safety

  • Buoyage

  • Visual and electronic navigation

  • Rules of the road

  • Weather forecasts

Cost is £220 per person to include RYA Training Pack and loan of Navigation Plotter and Dividers during Course.

Day Skipper Theory
CLASSROOM

You choose the dates!

The RYA are continually updating courses to take into account developments in technology and the electronic navigation aids now available on most cruising boats, sail or power.

Course topics include:

  • the basics of seamanship, parts of boats, terminolgy.

  • chartwork, position fixing, electronic charts and instruments

  • the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage.

  • plotting a course to steer, estimated positions and tides.

  • emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, lifejackets, liferafts and correct clothing and lots more.

 

The course is taught over 40 hours (over 5 days) with the addition of two assessment papers (one day) making six days in total. It can be covered as a series of short sessions, spread over several evenings and/or weekends or as an intensive 6 day week long course. We are flexible if you are.

Yachtmaster Theory

This course offers advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course or for those who have completed their Day Skipper Theory and just want to learn more.

 

Since Jan 2017 this study will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Coastal Skipper and Yachmaster Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meterology skills. That said, it is worth doing anyway.

 

Course topics include:

  • position fixing, tides, GPS other electronic equipment

  • taking and interpreting weather forecasts,

  • use of almanacs, plotage books and admiralty publications

  • collision regulations i.e. IRPCS

The Course is taught over 40 hours (5 Days) with the addition of 3 assessment papers (2 Days):- Navigation, IRPCS and Planning Passages with Meteorology. Usually done over 4 weekends, 7 days intensive or mixture of evenings and days.

 

Cost of the course is £440.00 and includes RYA Training Pack and loan of books during the course.
