VHF (SRC) Radio - the COURSE - Cowes IOW

We deliver two methods to study the new format VHF course. Both methods include in the course price the provision by us of The RYA VHF Training Pack (includes RYA VHF Handbook G31 either as a paper Book or as an E-Book).

Both these courses will then have the ASSESSMENT taken after the delivery of course by paying £60.00 payable to the RYA. We will help you with this.

Our two ways ol learning with us :-


  1. By 10 hours of Classroom work, over one day or over 3 evenings . Cost £105.00 per person (then Assessment of £60.00 per person) or

  2. If booked early with time to complete 3 hours of guided home study, then 7 hours of classroom study over one day or two evenings. Cost £85.00 per person Both these then need the RYA Assessment at £60.00 pp afterwards

without delivery of course by Uptown Sailing Instructors.

After completing your choice method of learning above you move on to take the independent written and practical assessment with our own School Assessor.


  1. In you do the on-line course then arrange with us your assessment date when you & we are available. This direct Assessment cost is £60.00 payable to the RYA at the assessment meeting itself. You should have your course completed certificate from the RYA given to your assessor.

RYA Sea Survival

An important part of this course is a 2 hour practical session in a swimming pool. Experiencing first hand the problems of entering an uncooperative liferaft and assisting others while fully kitted out in wet weather gear and a lifejacket. The rest of the course is made up of two 3 hour sessions making 6 hour classroom time in total. If you are comfortable you can operate a hand held flare under supervision.



Course topics include:-


  • liferafts and the equipment they contain.

  • survival techniques.

  • the design of lifejackets.

  • medical aspect of sea survival.

  • search and rescue techniques.

Cost of the course is £110 per person. We provide the RYA Training Packs and the lifejackets for use in the swimming pool.

The course is delivered over 3 evening sessions or one full day session or a pool session then 2 classroom sessions.

Diesel Engine.


Whether you sail a yacht with an auxilary diesel engine or are a motor cruising enthusiast, this course could not just save you money, but one day save your life.

Course topics include:-

  • the principles of diesel engine operation.

  • the systems and parts of the engine.

  • fault finding.

  • rectification of common problems.

  • bleeding the fuel system.

  • changing the impeller.

  • routine maintenance.

  • winter lay up procedures.


Maximum of 6 students and cost per person is £85.00 to include RYA Training Pack delivered over one day.
